Recipients for the Kennedy Center Honors have recently been announced, and they include two Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees.
Billy Joel and Carlos Santana will be joining legendary jazz artist Herbie Hancock and opera star Marina Arroyo, as the four musicians being honored with the nation’s highest honor for individuals who had a profound influence on the American culture through the arts. Also being honored is actress Shirley MacLaine. The selection of this year’s honorees marks the first from a revised selection process, following accusations of excluding Latinos from advocacy groups.
The honorees will be saluted on December 15th during a star-studded gala, which will be taped to air on December 29th on CBS. It will hosted by President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama, and Secretary of State John Kerry.
In other music news, David Bowie is among the nominees for Britain’s prestigious Mercury Prize. The rock icon is up for album of the year, for his latest album The Next Day. The Mercury Prize is an honor open to acts hailing from Britain and Ireland and the prize consist of 20,000 pounds (32,000 in American dollars), and the award’s strong list of nominees also includes Arctic Monkeys and Jake Bugg.
The winner will be announced, during a ceremony in London.
