Three UTSA student athletes have won Conference USA player of the week honors CUSA announced on Monday and Tuesday capping a great week for UTSA athletics.
On Monday Jens Jeters was given Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week honors after the Roadrunners completely smothered the Houston defense on Friday night.
The Roadrunners restricted Houston to 208 yards, with -26 rushing yards, and Jeters proved a vital part of that defensive effort with five tackles and one fumble being impressive statistics for the linebacker.
The defensive performance from the Roadrunners was so dominant that it seemed a certainty that a Roadrunner would win the award and it was Jeter’s leadership and solid work in a strong defensive performance that won him the award.
In volleyball, UTSA’s impressive weekend allowed libero Annie Kunes to win the CUSA player of the Week award for the first week of the season after helping UTSA to a 2-1 win over the Texas A&M invitational.
Kunes managed 5.54 digs per set across three matches in a stunning weekend for UTSA Volleyball, managing 18 against Tulane in the first match of the tournament as the Roadrunners crushed Tulane.
UTSA’s second match was a four set loss to Iowa, where she managed 18 digs but history was made in the final match, as UTSA managed their first ever win over Texas A&M in five sets with Kunes managing a career high 39 digs through the match, bringing her final total for the tournament to 72 digs.
The final award came in a sport that gets less attention as Cross Country athlete, Stephanie Wangui, claimed the Conference USA Athlete of the Week award,
It was Wangui’s first career individual title as she won the Alamo City opener in a time of 14:46.95 for the 4km course, leading UTSA to victory to open the season.
