Recreational ice skating competitors from three Pittsburgh area ice rinks are set to compete at one of the country’s largest Ice Skating Institute (ISI) competitions this weekend when the 2013 ISI Winter Classic comes to Miami University’s Goggin Ice Center in Oxford, Ohio from Feb. 8-10.
Fourteen members of Delmont’s Center Ice Arena, 16 members of the North Park Skate Team and one skater representing the City of Greensburg Recreation Department will join 48 other ISI rinks and more than 830 competitors in three days of competition hosted by the Goggin Ice Center. In total, these 31 skaters will compete in more than 180 individual and couples events, including free skating, ice dance, spotlights, compulsories, jump and spin, interpretative and surprise.
During the competition, one skater from each ISI member rink or club attending the 2013 Winter Classic will also be chosen as a recipient of the ISI Good Sport Award 2013. This award will be presented to the awardee who best personifies the qualities of the “ISI Skaters Creed,” which includes such attributes as being “modest in victory,” “gracious in defeat” end encouraging toward teammates. Past local winners include Paige DiToppa of Center Ice Arena who returns to the Winter Classic this year to compete in 11 different events. DiToppa was selected for the ISI Worlds Good Sport Award in 2010.
Events will run continuously from 8:45 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 7:15 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m Sunday. Admission to all 2013 ISI Winter Classic events is free.
