Three Mavericks to compete in 2010 Winter Olympics

Minnesota State University, Mankato women's hockey players Nina Tikkinen and Emilia Andersson along with former Maverick men's hockey player David Backes will compete in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Tikkinen, who most recently got the Olympic nod, will be representing her home country on the Finnish women's hockey team. She has tallied two goals and six assists in 17 games this season as a Junior Forward for MSU women's hockey.

Andersson was selected for the Swedish Olympic hockey team last month. She has taken the year off from school to train in her home country. As a Maverick, she tallied four goals and 14 assists in 34 games played as a freshman blue liner.

Former Maverick men's hockey captain Backes was selected for the U.S. Olympic Team. He tallied 46 goals and 73 assists in 115 games as a Maverick Forward from 2003 to 2006. Backes now plays in the NHL for the St. Louis Blues and has scored 64 goals and 71 assists in 252 games with the club.

Olympic action starts Feb. 12, 2010. See below for a listing of the first games for each player.

-Tikkinen and the Finnish Olympic women's hockey team Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m.

-Andersson and the Swedish Olympic women's hockey team Feb. 13 at 2 p.m.

-Backes and the U.S. Olympic men's hockey team Feb. 16 at 2 p.m.
