When it rains it pours. Cincinnatians have been appreciating the break in the excessively rainy weather recently. It's been a great weekend for getting outdoors for a cookout or maybe wandering around a yardsale or flea market. Next weekend will be a fantastic weekend for pottery. Those who love and appreciate fine ceramics will have no shortage of beautiful items from Art Nouveau, Modernism, Post Modernism, and Contemporary works to view and to purchase when three major auctions take place in the Queen City.
Humlar & Nolan, located at Tower Place Mall downtown, will offer a major auction entitled Rookwood XXI: Keramics 2011, Art Glass 2011 & World War II Posters. Saturday, June 4th will begin with works by famous art pottery manufacturers Weller and Cowan, including an iconic Viktor Schreckengost Jazz Bowl. That afternoon will see the sale of impressive works of art glass from Art Nouveau masters such as Steuben, Tiffany, and Lalique, among many others. Also on the afternoon of June 4th will be a collection of vintage World War II posters from the Vernon Rader collection.
On June 5th Humlar & Nolan will auction off 400 lots of Rookwood pottery, including a Gorham sterling silver overlay Standard Glaze vase. Preview all these items at the Tower Place showroom, 28th W. 4th St., from 10 am - 4 pm Monday through Saturday until the auction starts. Treadway is also offering a pre-auction preview of classic American art pottery at its gallery in O'Bryonville, 2029 Madison Road. Visit the gallery from May 16th through June 3rd, Monday through Friday 9 am - 5 pm, Saturday 10 am - 5 pm. Their Decorative Arts Auction will take place Sunday, June 5th at the Continental Room of the Cincinnati Hilton Netherlands Plaza and will include a large assortment of Rookwood. For those with a more contemporary taste in studio pottery, the Cowan's+Clark+DelVecchio Ceramics Auction takes place on Saturday, June 4th. Visit the Cowan's 6270 Este Avenue showroom Friday, June 3rd between 12 pm and 6 pm, or Saturday, June 4th from 8 am to 10 am for the preview, with the actual auction commencing at 10 am on June 4th.
