Ten-year-old Oscar knows what he wants and isn't shy about taking it and he certainly isn't letting his age or his handicap keep him down. The German short-haired pointer was caught on video stealing sausages from a local store in New Zealand.
The shameless pooch was polite and friendly in his whole approach, but his crime spree landed him in the dog pound. Now he's waiting to get sprung when his owners come home.
According to Associated Press and 3News.co.nz, he was caught in an Invercargill dairy store, Alray Dairy on Windsor Street. The dog made his unsuccessful shoplifting foray on Friday, 4 January 2013. He knew exactly what he wanted: a $5.40 (NZ) roll of dog treat. Neither reported what the brand was, but he took it from the refrigerator section.
The dog enjoyed his treat, evidenced by the wrapper left three blocks away from the store, and decided to take another go five days later. The staff was ready this time and the owner, Esmay Hay, told 3News that "My staff members tied him up and put him outside the shop and he was still there at 7 that night. Then my 23-year-old grandson took pity on him and bought him a dog roll and fed him." After that, Oscar went to the local pound.
Oscar has become a local celebrity, but he wasn't exactly homeless. His owner, who was not identified, was away on vacation to Stewart Island and have left Oscar in the care of a relative according to the New Zealand Herald.
Let's hope that Oscar's owner will find him a better dogsitter with more secure fencing next time. That's a good lesson for Los Angeles and Southern California dog owners: Teach your dog to be polite and make sure your dogsitter keeps your dog off the streets (and microchip your dog and not necessarily the dogsitter).
