Three for father: Sheex, Dyson, and Monoprice

Sheex Sheets $159 - $239
Sheex Sheets $159 - $239
Kenneth Fish

Father’s Day, as many of you are aware, is right around the corner. Men, as many of you are aware, are notoriously difficult to shop for. That’s why I’ve chosen a few favorites from the reviews in this column to help with the decision making process.

Sheex Sheets $159 - $239

Everything about these sheets, which are a blend of 87% polyester and 13% Spandex, is lovely. The material is about as soft and inviting as anything could be, and it always has a cool, neutral feel to it. Slipping between these sheets, is always a sumptuous, almost seductive, experience, and they make it easy for me to achieve my goal of sleeping seven hours and fifteen minutes every night. Being able to stay cool, dry, and comfortable all night long is easy thanks to the fact that the material they are made out of breathes and transfers heat two times better than cotton. This means no more pillow flipping or trying to find the cool spot during the next heat wave. You wouldn’t necessarily think sheets when thinking of a gift for Dad, but these sheets are totally gift-worthy.

Dyson AM06 Bladeless Fan Was $299. Now $249

Beyond its visual appeal, this fan is a marvel of modern engineering. With an input power of just 26 watts and the ability to circulate a surprisingly large amount of air, the AM06 is one of the most efficient freestanding fans on the market today. This is all accomplished by the mixed-flow impeller that is tucked away in the middle of the perforated tube that can pull in about six gallons of air per second and send it up to what Dyson calls the loop amplifier. This loop is where all the magic happens. Looked at in cross section, the loop is designed like an airfoil with the backside of the loop being tighter than the front. As the air passes over the airfoil it creates an area of low pressure directly behind the loop amplifier. This area of low pressure draws air into the column of air being pushed through the loop and the air surrounding the loop is simultaneously entrained by the high pressure column of air exiting the loop. These three sources of air comprise the total airflow which, according to Dyson, is 15 times greater than the six gallons being drawn in by the impeller. Unless my calculator is broken, this means that the AM06 is capable of moving 90 gallons of air per second, and that is seriously impressive. As with the Sheex Sheets, you wouldn’t normally think of getting your old man a desk fan for Father’s Day, but the wow factor of the AM06 totally changes that.

Monoprice Premium 5.1-Channel Home Theater System $229.86

The sound quality of the 10565 is so much better than what was expected. In fact, thanks in part to the fully adjustable (low-pass filter, phase & volume) powered subwoofer, this surround sound system, dare I state for the record, is almost as good as my trusty Bose Accoustimass which costs a tad bit more than the 10565 (4X the price, actually). The Premium 5.1-Channel Home Theater System with Subwoofer by Monoprice is the bargain of the century regarding power (100 watts for satellite and center speakers, 200 watts for the subwoofer) and price (under $250). If you have the room, and a proper 5.1 surround sound receiver or amplifier, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better sounding speaker system for the money. Getting this for your Pop not only means better sound for just about everything in your house, it also gives him a project to do as far as setting up the sound system.
