Another well kept secret in the Central New York region is not so far off the beaten path, but somehow it remains somewhat under the radar. Three Falls Woods in Manlius is another well preserved natural playground that is well worth investigating for hikers, mountain bikers, and photogs. The trails are worn and easily identifiable, so it’s surprising that more folks aren’t aware of it.
The triangular shaped parcel covers approximately 175 acres, so when time allows, it pays to explore it all. Several little treasures such as old foundations can be found throughout Three Falls Woods, but the main attraction is obviously the waterfalls and rightfully so.
The Tall Twins, Staircase, and Cascade Falls are indeed a sight to behold. It is suggested that it’s best to visit these hidden gems in the spring or the fall, but going in the winter has its own rewards. When the trees are barren, it provides a more open view of this free flowing trio and the ice formations are quite remarkable.
However, the forest at Three Falls Woods is beautifully lush in the summer and if precipitation has been plentiful, it makes for a great creek walk. Trees provide sufficient shade while allowing the sun to shine through and shed just enough light to feel its warmth. The area near the bottom of the falls would be the ultimate spot for a picnic.
This is a fantastic place to bring canine companions as well and on any given day, that’s a proven fact. Every four-legged friend walking with their human at Three Falls always appears to be loving life, so it’s a tail-wagger’s paradise too.
Anyone with a slightly adventurous side can get up close and personal to each of the falls; it just requires a bit of caution and a lot of inner child to do so. Natural beauty like this should be appreciated and approached with good sense, but enjoyed with wonderment. There’s a bit of eight year old boy inside everyone and inviting him to come out and play is what makes outdoor adventures so much fun; just make sure the voice of experience comes along.
Places like Three Falls Woods are to be cherished and respected; they should never be taken for granted. There’s been talk for a few years now of development on this incredible space, but hopefully it will remain untouched and as is. It would be a crime for what some dub as “progress” to destroy what Mother Nature has provided here.
CNY Hiking shares useful info, along with photos and maps to provide some guidance and a sneak preview. Between that and the NY Falls website, it should be quite simple to plan a visit.
Three Falls is undoubtedly worth checking out, even if done so conservatively. Because it’s so close and accessible, it can be visited time and time again. It’s not a bad idea to see what it has to offer in all four seasons or to map out different routes each trip. Those that truly appreciate Three Falls would never find it boring, that’s for sure.
