In an email blast delivered Monday evening, the former president asked his followers to donate $3 to help McAuliffe defeat Republican Ken Cuccinelli in Virginia’s hotly contested governor’s race.
Coincidentally — or not — the left-wing group MoveOn.org and the Democratic Party also solicited $3 donations in fund-raising appeals emailed last month, Watchdog.org reported.
Playing the populist card, Clinton warned, “We’ve seen what a small group of Republicans backed by very wealthy special interest groups can do.”
He did not mention that his wife hosted two high-end fund-raisers for McAuliffe in the past two months. Admission to her New York gala cost $25,000 a couple.
Bill Clinton personally put his money where his mouth is, writing a $100,000 check to McAuliffe’s campaign earlier this year.
One lifelong Virginia Democrat won’t be heeding Clinton’s call, however.
