Three confirmed cases of Legionnaire's Disease found in guests at Luxor in Vegas

The Southern Nevada Health District reported today that three guests who stayed at the Luxor within the last year contracted Legionnaires Disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention national surveillance program confirmed the incidence of Legionaires disease in those three Luxor guests.

District officials say the first two cases were reported in spring 2011, but follow - up testing of the water supply at that time were negative and both affected patients recovered. However, a third case was reported to the health district in January 2012 after the afflicted patient died. Testing of the water supply following that incident yielded positive results for presence of  Legionella bacteria, which is the causative organism of the disease that is often characterized by a serious and potentially fatal form of pneumonia.

The Luxor management and staff immediately initiated a remediation program including superheating and super - chlorination of the water system and no additional cases have been reported.

Luxor is owned by MGM Resorts International, who is also facing an ongoing civil lawsuit involving guests who allegedly contracted Legionnaires during stays at the Aria Resort and Casino in June and July of last year. Eight guests filed suit against Aria and it's builders for over $337 million in the case ( see previous LVE article linked below ), which is currently still pending in federal court in Las Vegas.
