Three Alabama bars make the DRAFT Magazine America's 100 Best Beer Bars

DRAFT Magazine is back at it and has released their list of America's 100 Best Beer Bars of 2012.  This year, the state of Alabama has three bars make the list: two of which are veterans and there is a newcomer joining them in the honor.

First up, we have The J. Clyde in Birmingham.  The J. Clyde has made this list several times over the last few years and is the longest standing representative from Alabama to earn DRAFT Magazine Best Beer Bar honors.  The J. Clyde has been seen as the epicenter for change in Alabama craft beer culture since Free the Hops made it their mission to reform Alabama beer legislation.  Still, The J. Clyde continues to find room for improvement whether it is by constantly finding ways to add new beers to the draft wall, the weekly cask ale selection, or by hiring a new chef to keep their menu vibrant and exciting year around.  Here is what DRAFT had to say about them:

"THE J. CLYDE HOT ROCK TAVERN AND ALEHOUSE | Birmingham, Ala.

Alabama’s emerging beer scene can largely be attributed to the liquid education this stalwart provides in the form of beer dinners, firkin Fridays and a simply stellar global tap list. Don’t be surprised to see Italy’s Almond ’22 Pink IPA alongside pours from Alabama’s Good People Brewing and Straight to Ale. 1312 Cobb Ln."

Next to make the list is The Nook Tavern of Huntsville.  The Nook has been in the middle of the great brewery boom that has taken place over the last few years in Huntsville.  One look at their draft list quickly shows you what is new in the Huntsville beer scene and that they are staunch supporters of their local breweries.  With that said, that same draft list fills out with an amazing selection of beers from all over the country and world.  The Nook is the epitome of the cozy neighborhood bar, just one with a world class beer menu.  It is no wonder why they have returned this year to receive honors as one of America's 100 Best Beer Bars.  Here is DRAFT Magazine's write up on The Nook:

"THE NOOK | Huntsville, Ala.

'Epic' is the only way to describe the beer selection at the Nook, with roughly 50 beers on tap and more than 300 in the bottle. Rare vintages like Gales Prize Old Ale 1996 and J.W. Lees Harvest Ale 2001 tempt the wallet, while Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale delivers a taste of the South on draft. 3305 Bob Wallace Ave."

Finally, we have the newcomer to the list: The Stem & Stein of Madison.  The Stem & Stein gives both wine and beer equal billing at their establishment, proving that great craft beer can hold its own when compared to wine.  The Stem & Stein provides you with the unique experience of being able to sit down to sample one of their 250 bottles before you commit to take a six pack home.  They also offer 11 draft beer options from around the world if you just want to sit down for a great beer and meal.  Want to give them a shot?  Head over on a Friday where they do weekly beer tastings.  Stem & Stein proves to be a new and fun way to shop for your beer.  Here is what DRAFT had to say about them:

"THE STEM & STEIN | Madison, Ala.

Like the name suggests, wine and beer share equal billing here, a feat considering the gargantuan selection of each. Brews from around the world flow out of the bar’s 11 taps—which is an essential first stop when you’re considering what to purchase from the more than 250-bottle selection. Visit each Friday for special beer tastings, or strike out on your own to discover your next favorite IPA. 10871 County Line Rd., Suite B"

Congratulations are certainly in order for The J. Clyde, The Nook Tavern, and The Stem & Stein.  It is great to see that even though DRAFT Magazine becomes more selective in their lists each year, Alabama continues to add to the list of our beer bars receiving the recognition.  Things are constantly changing in Alabama craft beer culture, and we have these three bars and many more like them throughout the state to thank.  Our neighborhood pubs provide us the option to enjoy great beers served by a knowledgeable staff in an atmosphere that is an extension of our homes.  In addition to that, they give our local breweries a place to have their beer sold and showcased. They are the life blood to our craft beer scene.  Just remember that next time you are in one of these pubs.  Congratulate them on the honors they have received from DRAFT Magazine but, most importantly, thank them for the services they provide and for being the friends they have become.  Prost!
