Thousands rally at state capitals across America to protest stricter gun control (Video)

In response to a social media summoning by the online community "Guns Across America," thousands of gun toting gun advocates descended upon state capitals across the U.S. yesterday to conduct peaceful demonstrations in response to President Barack Obama’s recent gun control plan.

The rallies at statehouses nationwide were organized by Eric Reed, who promoted the gun control demonstrations through his Facebook site Gun Control = More Crime. Many demonstrators arrived with handguns holstered on their hips and rifles slung across their shoulders.

Gun rights supporters also proclaimed yesterday as Gun Appreciation Day and encouraged gun owners to visit local gun shops, gun ranges, and to rally at their state capitals.

Ironically, the rallies across America occurred on the same day that accidental shootings at Ind., N.C., and Ohio gun shows on Gun Appreciation Day left five people wounded by accidental discharges of shotgun pellets according to The Associated Press.

Referring to the president’s gun control stand and the Newtown massacre, Rep. Steve Toth said at yesterday’s rally in Austin said:

"The thing that so angers me, and I think so angers you, is that this president is using children as a human shield to advance a very liberal agenda that will do nothing to protect them."

Toth, a Texas Republican has already introduced legislation to ban any future federal limits on assault weapons or high-capacity magazines like those recently signed into law by the president.

At the Phoenix rally yesterday, American citizen and gun advocate Eric Cashman said:

"We're out here because this country has some very wise founding fathers and they knew they were being oppressed when they were a British colony."

"Had they not had their firearms ... to stand up against the British, we'd still be a British colony."

Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson said "all of us here, together, are right about our liberty."

"And we will not back down."
