Thousands of businesses at risk from identify fraud at government website (Photos)

One way of doing business with the government or contracting with the government is to register your business through a government developed consolidated secure website entitled SAM.gov, System Award Management.

The government administration left a void in the online registration form that would permit their employees, hackers and other businesses to acquire anyone's personal information offering an opportunity for identity theft.

The website was offline this week and is being security patched after launching just last week.

Hundreds of thousands of independent small business owners use their social security numbers rather than a taxpayer identification number (TIN) for ease of filing quarterly and annual tax forms.

The site is back online but some components of www.SAM.gov are temporarily unavailable.

Users will not be able to register a new entity or update an entity record until Entity Management is available at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, March 25th.

The Huntsville Examiner.com recommends that you monitor your bank accounts and notify your financial institution immediately if you see any discrepancies.
