Thousands attend funeral service for gospel music artist Walter Hawkins

Over 3,000 people packed the Paramount Theater in Oakland, California to pay homage to Gospel music artist Walter Hawkins. The 4 hour long homegoing service was streamed live courtesy of KTVU for those not able to attend.

The celebration was full of great gospel music performances and touching remembrances of a man whose gospel gospel songs touched the world. Bishop Walter Hawkins was remembered as a humble man who loved unconditionally and encouraged others to do the same. His daughter-in-law, Sunny Hawkins, tearfully said that “he loved without judging”.

A gospel music tribute will air on Gospel Music Channel on Sunday, July 25, 2010 at 8 pm ET. The special tribute concert will follow Walter Hawkins Faith & Fame that is scheduled to air at 6 pm ET.
The musical celebration is titled, "The Man, the Music, The Ministry: A Musical Salute to Bishop Walter Hawkins.”

Gospel music artist Walter Hawkins passed away at the age of 61 on Sunday, July 11th at his home in Ripon, California after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
