Thoughtseize is one of the newest "Theros" spoilers revealed Aug. 31, 2013 during the PAX Prime "Magic" party. Featured in Wizards of the Coast's upcoming expert "Magic: The Gathering" expansion set "Theros," Thoughtseize is arguably one of the game's most powerful discard spells.
Thoughtseize - B
Sorcery (Rare)
Target player reveals his or her hand. You may choose a nonland card from it. That player discards that card. You lose 2 life.
"Knowledge is such a burden. Release it. Release all your fears to me."
-Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver
Unlike Duress, Thoughtseize can take creature spells out of an opponent's hand (just don't pick Loxodon Smiter). While there have been other one mana discard spells such as Appetite for Brains and Despise, no other one mana black spell compares to the power of Thoughtseize. Using Thoughtseize comes at a price of two life, however that's a bargain compared to the amount of life lost from one of the threats or burn spells Thoughtseize is likely to keep your adversary from casting.
The only other spell discard spell that compares to Thoughtseize is Hymn to Tourach, which can mana screw your rival by taking their lands. A first turn Dark Ritual into both Thoughtseize and Hymn to Tourach can be a devastating play in Legacy, especially when followed by a second Dark Confidant.
Thoughtseize currently sees heavy play in every format that it's legal in, and was going for almost $60 on the secondary market before being revealed during PAX Prime and dropping in half to $30. If Mutavault is any indication, we can expect the new version to debut in the low $20 range and slowly climb back up in price. There will be an ungodly amount of "Theros" product opened in the upcoming months, and Standard players will need to acquire playsets of this must have card while extra copies get snatched up by Modern, Legacy, and Eternal players.
How will you use Thoughtseize?
