Community is the little sitcom that could on NBC. It's amazing to realize after all the twists and turns the series has been through to get to Season 5. Three seasons evolving with creator Dan Harmon at the helm, a fourth season that's a bit of a mess to be polite, and now Dan Harmon returning to set things right into Season 5. Now the series is teetering in either direction, this is a big year for the show. The series that was lucky to get to this point is now having to prove that it is worthy to be at this stage of the game. To be frank, Community was lucky to get a Season 5.
The ratings were decent and didn't set the world on fire. It started to trend upward near the end but still for the most part the show was erratic ratings wise. Mostly because in my opinion the stories were all over the place, personally the Inspector Spacetime one was a favorite of the last season. Of course anything with Malcolm McDowell was impressive because of one reason, that man cannot do anything half way and anything he does ends up awesome by default. He's one of those kind of actors. Those were some of my favorite aspects of Community.
Character wise the show managed to keep everything in tact, you could tell Community was going through growing pains. The writers and showrunners were trying to keep the aspects of Community that Dan Harmon fans liked while still trying to keep NBC happy ratings wise. I never did envy the people who took over the show, Moses Port and David Guarascio even with many of the Community writers on board were still in a thankless position. Dan Harmon was gone and immediately split the audience in half. Which is why Dan Harmon's return was met with a lot of excitement and trepidation.
Now Jeff Winger's (Joel McHale) returned back to Greendale as a teacher, with a hint towards Dan Harmon's pre-season four whimsy and madness notable in the series before the fourth season hit. Of course Donald Glover, a.k.a. Troy is gone and in a more limited role this season. Now from the video I put in here, Joel McHale is excited about this season and Ken Jeong is excited about a scene he just filmed as Chang. We'll get to see on January 2, 2014 if their excitement will translate to viewers. Community premieres with two episodes at 8:00 and 8:30 pm respectively on NBC, we'll see for ourselves if Dan Harmon can save Community in Season 5. Then we may get our fabled Six Seasons and a Movie.
