There’s a reason, maybe several reasons, the Founders didn’t stand-up a “democracy.”
You’re seeing a lot of those about now.
Democracy is “majority rule” and that the Founders said, is tyranny by majority. There is little, if any, difference between an all powerful monarch and an all powerful voting majority.
Democracy, doing what the majority insist on doing, is all of those things US “leaders” rail against and yet employ with impunity.
In Texas for example the majority population by design oppress, suppress and depress the minority population with disdain. It is purely and simply, “bully rule.” Anyone who is an independent thinker is marginalized, discredited, ridiculed and when possible has their reputation torn to shreds. This fourth option being the latest version of lynching by another name.
“Democracy”, don’t forget is what made it possible to name genocide “manifest destiny” and to keep slavery, Jim Crow, discrimination, and segregation across the nation and especially the South alive and well since at least the Civil War---some might say 1607.
“Democracy” insures that the minority is kept powerless and voiceless.
Even what was stood-up, a republic, has been powerless to alter the tendency toward “bully rule” by the majority population. What is supposed to distinguish a republic from a democracy is the rule of law designed to protect minorities. If you are a member of a minority, I’ve got to ask, “How’s that working out for you?”
On rare occasion it has happened that minorities have been protected but only temporarily. Those doing the protecting, the laws enacted and the philosophical concept and will that brought the protection about usually face a vicious backlash. The backlash comes from of course the egregiously misanthropic population.
That egregiously misanthropic majority population makes certain the enabled or protected minority is quickly put back in its place or as close to “its place” as possible. US history is rife with example after example.
Among the many curiously fascinating anomalies in US development and history are the prevailing myths that have become accepted as reality. There are so many myths that made the present condition possible. Most people don’t even realize that these myths are myths. US citizens have been told for so long that these myths are reality that most simply accept them as so. That acceptance makes possible the political climate we have today.
The Fairness Doctrine was undone during the Reagan Administration. That was the firewall meant to keep fact and fiction separate. It had been in place for at least 60 years. Since that firewall was removed a large cast of entertainers posing as journalists have used their “bully pulpit” to brainwash, influence and rile the less educated, more misanthropic and hateful majority population.
Coupled with the built-in tug-of-war political system we have--- how on earth could we be anywhere else but where we are today?
In Texas red one in four citizens lack healthcare. Texas red has the nation’s highest prison population and execution rate. Texas red also leads the way in the number of wrongly convicted. Texas red has one of the poorest apartheid public education systems in the nation.
Notwithstanding the majority voting population of the state and its repugnant governor refuse to put into effect the affordable care act, continues to execute even those that forensic evidence exonerates, and recently chose to take billions of dollars from an already lackluster apartheid public educations system.
Where’s the push back? Push back from a minority population in a “democracy” is pretty much a waste of time. The system is rigged in favor of the controlling bully population. We call that "democracy."
From Texas Red: a cratered landscape of for profit prisons, deplorable apartheid public education, lack of healthcare and politicians and majority population intent on keeping it that way…
