Nothing to say
We all have time when we have nothing to say, but we feel obligated to say something to contribute to a conversation. It these times that we get ourselves in trouble saying something out of turn which has no meaning or it is out of place. We are seating there thinking I have to say something , All at once we blurt out some comment, everyone stops looks at us and begin to scratch their head. Thinking, why did they say that, that does not fit in, now that is stupid, or I just do not understand. Then we catch ourselves and think. I should have not said that, or why did I say that, why did I not keep my mouth shut. It too late I said it and it is out there what do I do next, then we say something else that just digs a deeper hole, before it all over we do look like an idiot, our face is red, everyone is staring at us and we are desiring to crawl under the table, then we just say, I going to keep my mouth shut and hope this embarrassment will pass and it does. Now these are idol words.
Idol words have a way of causing us a lot of trouble, they show our short comings, and can make us look foolish. There are times to not say anything, just keep our mouth shut and listen. James tells us to be slow to speak, slow to anger and quick to listen, yet every one of us have time when we do the opposite and speak out of turn. Have you ever wondered why we have two ears and only one mouth, it is simple, we are to listen twice as much as we speak. If we could ever master this practice we could avoid a lot of embarrassing moments.
The Bible also tells us we will give account for every idol word, those words we blurt out, those times we speak out of turn, the times we say something and try to cover them up by saying I did not mean that, these are the words God keeps a record of and one day we will answer for each one. We are told from the abundance of the heart we speak, when we blurt things out not realizing what we are saying that is when the heart begins to speak and one day we will hear these words again, so I encourage you to do what James tells us, with God’s help, get control of the words spoken, they are being written down somewhere.
