Those Golden Paved Streets Are Tarnishing

While the world advances as a whole, the United States is getting left behind. Once this great nation was the envy of all who wished to find a place to achieve their personal dreams, but many are discovering what appeared as gold, turned out to be only copper, and it is quickly tarnishing.

As the gap between the rich and poor continues to widen, and the middle class continues to shrink, poverty is becoming the number one factor for premature death in the U.S. Among the other technologically advanced civilizations, U.S. citizens are living unhealthy lifestyles and dying younger than their allies and neighbors. In a land of so much abundance, how can this be happening?

It is a sad fact that our education system is one of the weakest, resulting in a huge percentage of high school dropouts. Most of these individuals will remain poverty stricken for the rest of their lives. Many of the females will have four or five children each, all with a different baby daddy supported by taxpayers. Many of the males will populate the ever-increasing prison system that has become so popular in the states as a way of separating and discarding those we refuse to educate and rehabilitate.

Outside of our failing in the education department, which keeps young minds from expanding and contributing something positive to our society, we also have horrendous diets compared to other wealthy democratic nations. The amount of unnecessary fillers, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, and food colorants is astounding to some of our international neighbors, who question why we produce such unhealthy things to sell to our citizens.

Of course, the bottom line is greed. The food coloring makes food more alluring to the eye. The artificial sweeteners create the false image of being able to consume more and not get fat. The preservatives allows the food items to remain on the shelf years before it has to be sold, and the fillers render twice the volume of food goods with cheap interchangeable substitutes, such as genetically modified soy and corn products. This nasty combination consumed on a regular basis is tearing down the health of the general populace, causing extreme obesity and weakened immune systems.

Many people don’t notice because they never received enough education to recognize the difference between what they should eat and what they shouldn’t. Poor people, who can only afford to purchase the cheapest store brand products compared to the more natural or organic food items, don't have the opportunity to feed their families correctly.

While the ingenious slogan “Super Size It” is making some food and beverage producers rich, it is also causing unnatural eating habits among the populace, creating even more obesity among our youth. Taking that into consideration, with the fact that our health care is inaccessible to an enormous percentage of our citizens, it is easy to see why Americans are getting sick more often, and dying sooner than those that used to envy us.
