Thoroughbred “all turf” racing will take place for ten days at the Meadowlands beginning Friday, Oct. 11. It will be the last meet using the Meadowlands grandstand as we know it which debuted nearly forty years ago in 1976. With the exception of the opening season of 1976, autumn has been dedicated to Thoroughbred racing at the Meadowlands. A grand opening for the new Meadowlands Racetrack will take place later this fall.
The October Thoroughbred meet will feature six races per card including the popular Jersey Shore Six, which debuted at Monmouth Park earlier this year. The calendar calls for live racing on Fridays and Saturdays through Nov. 2 with the addition of Monday cards on Oct. 14 and 28.
The Meadowlands meet comes right on the heels of the current Monmouth Park meet, which wraps up on Sunday, Oct. 6. Monmouth Park will race on Saturdays and Sundays through meet’s-end.
Out with the old; in with the new
While the current, 36-year-old grandstand holds more than 25,000 fans, its $85 million replacement is designed to hold a capacity of about 5,000 to be more in tune with the times. However, the amenities will not be spared.
According to Harnesslink the new grandstand will feature a state-of-the-art sports bar, a separate lounge with dining and another food court area. There will also be a VIP section, trackside restaurant, covered outer terrace and, of course, complete simulcast facilities. A roof-top deck will offer a sweeping view of the New York City skyline.
As reported in Harnesslink, Jeff Gural, the racetrack’s chairman is extremely pleased with the progress and construction of the new facility, "The project is on schedule, and I am anxious to see it completed,” said Gural, “the Meadowlands will once again be a cool place to come, have fun, and hang out in."
Post time for the fall “All Turf” Thoroughbred meet will be 2:15 p.m. For more information visit www.monmouthpark.com or call 732-222-5100.
