The Twelfth Annual Michael W. Thorne Scholarship 4 Mile Run/Walk will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2014 in West Long Branch, N.J.
The event is in memory of Michael W. Thorne who on July 3, 1984 at the age of 20 lost his life working as a volunteer fireman. Proceeds from the event are used to fund a scholarship in his name.
The race starts and finishes at Franklin Lake in West Long Branch which is conveniently located just off of State Highway 36. The course is fast and flat and is USATF certified.
There will also be kid’s races starting at 9:45 a.m. of distances 25 yards to 1 mile for those 14 and under..
There will be awards for the top finishers and age groups as well. Lots of random prizes are also awarded. After the race many participants head over to the local fire house for a post-race party.
In last year’s race breaking the tape for the men and overall was repeat winner Robert Cavanaugh of West Long Branch in a time of 20:51. He was followed by Farnese DaSilva also of West Long Branch in 23:22 and then Antonio Meza Sorino of Red Bank in 23:23.
For the women coming in first was Kiera Delaurier of St. Petersburg, Florida in a time of 25:10. She was followed by Sophia Barnathan of Brooklyn, N.Y. in 26:37 and then Jillian Reichardt of Ocean, N.J. in 26:58.
And for those who would like to run their first 5K there is a group starting on Tuesday, May 13, 2014.
