The new "Thor" trailer revealed the most exciting footage from the upcoming film by director Kenneth Branagh, starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins. Audiences now learn more about the villains and antagonists who will face Marvel's Norse God of Thunder.
"A brother who is unhappy is a dangerous relative to have," Branagh said of Thor's sibling, Loki, in an interview with EW.
"The story involves a clash with an ice planet and the frost giants who live therein. They — as might be suggested by the name — are enormous creatures of incredible power who have been robbed of their power and glory by Odin, Thor’s father. What fuels a lot of this intense battle is revenge. This is an angry race, trying to get back at Thor and the Asgardians, the self-proclaimed guardians of the universe."
Branagh continues as he discusses The Destroyer, a huge metal-banded construct which fires disintegrating blasts. The director elaborates on the "incredible war machine" description: "This series of metal bands form a giant, walking beast and open to reveal terrifying firepower," he explained.
Marvel comic readers understand that The Destroyer isn't inherently evil; but rather an enchanted suit of armor forged by Odin, Thor's father, and it is subject to the whims of whomever controls it. (Possibly Loki?)
"In the right hands, this incredibly powerful device — awesome in its killing quality — is potentially a creature of extraordinary protective powers," Branagh said. "In the wrong hands, it is a nightmare."
