It’s a busy week if you are the type that still collects DVDs. If you are not, and love streaming the movies on your fancy space-television, then this is still a busy week. It’s a week where three movies that have gotten a lot of award nominations come to the home movie market. It is also the week that a big superhero movie that came out last year also comes to DVD. So, if you want to catch up on a couple of big award movies before the Academy Award ceremony this coming weekend, this is a chance to head to the DVD store or start checking out OnDemand or whatever else you use.

Here are the movies coming out on DVD today, February 25, 2014:

Her - Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams. The movie that looks slightly into the future and sees a lonely man develop a romantic relationship with a computer operating system that is voiced by Scarlett Johanssen. It is also directed by quirky-movie director Spike Jonze. This movie garnered huge praise when it was in theaters and has won a number of major awards so far. It has been nominated for several Academy Awards, as well. This one might have to go on your must-see list. Rated R.

Nebraska - Bruce Dern, Will Forte, Stacy Keach. From the director of The Descendants, the movie that won a bunch of awards a couple of years ago comes another one that has garnered huge praise, awards and nominations. Dern’s career has been revived, according to many, and this movie is also showing legs among the non-critic movie-going public. It’s the story of an old man who becomes convinced that he has won a million dollars via a sweepstakes. He ends up on a road trip with his son. It’s touching, sweet, funny and one that you should really see, so add this one to your list. Rated R.

Thor: The Dark World - Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston. The blond Avenger is back and this time he’s battling evil elves. During a once-in-a-billion-year event that brings the “Nine Realms” into alignment, portals are popping up all over the place allowing humans from Earth to travel to places like Asgard and vice versa. This is not a good thing, although it does reunie Thor with Jane, his human love. But it also awakens the evil elf Malektih who has a big ol’ grudge against Odin and his kind. Thor ends up having to recruit his evil brother Loki in the battle to save all of existence. The movie has gotten lukewarm reviews from both critics and comic book fans, so this one is one to catch on cable, perhaps. Rated PG-13.

Gravity - Sandra Bullock, George Clooney. The remarkable movie set just above the surface of the planet Earth. Bullock stars as a medical engineer on her first space shuttle mission to repair a satellite. When another satellite breaks apart and the pieces end up smashing the shuttle into pieces, Bullock and Clooney end up tethered together to try and survive - alone, in space. Filmed to make you actually feel like you are in space, this one is a MUST SEE. I am personally endorsing this one and encourage you to try and view it on the biggest screen you can find. The action is intense and the drama will keep you on the edge of your seat. Bullock is in virtually every scene and is outstanding in this role. Rated PG-13.
