Thor changes from God of Thunder to Goddess of Thunder

Yesterday, Disney-owned Marvel announced on The View, a Disney-owned television program, that the new Thor will be a woman.

Whoopi Goldberg summed it up best by saying that, "It’s a huge day in the Marvel Universe...That’s right. Thor is a woman!”

The new Thor will debut this fall in October.

While Marvel is keeping mum about the exact details of the changeover, they did let the audience know that the current Thor messed up pretty badly and so he is no longer worthy of wielding Mjölnir, his mighty hammer. Marvel editor Will Ross teased that the inscription on Mjölnir will probably have to be updated since the current inscription is gender specific: "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor".

This change will undoubtably rock the Marvel Universe and present Marvel with a strong, mythical female character. This seems to be a counterbalance to DC Comics and their big plans for Wonder Woman. Another possible reason for the change is to cast a completely new unknown for Thor in the Marvel films because Chris Hemsworth is simply getting too expensive for Marvel's liking.

Of course, whether the plan was intended to splash cold water on DC's Wonder Woman or to recast a different actor for the role, it will benefit a segment of the comic book market that is usually overlooked, namely the female market.

This new development for Thor is a positive change for the comic book market and we'll have to wait until October to see whether or not the new Thor is worthy of fandom.
