According to the Canadian Press, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Marielle Thompson of Vancouver, British Columbia won a World Cup silver medal in women's ski cross in Are, Sweden on Saturday.

According to the Associated Press, the winner was Fanny Smith of Switzerland, who won in very snowy conditions. Sandra Naeslund of Sweden won the bronze medal to make her home nation crowd go home satisfied.

Thompson, who is only 21 years of age, now has five World Cup podium finishes this season. To go along with her gold medal at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Thompson has won World Cup events in Nakiska, Alberta (an hour west of Calgary), and Val Thorens.

Smith meanwhile is the reigning world champion in 2013 from Voss, Norway. Smith, who was also the World Cup champion in 2013, was expected to contend for a gold medal at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, but finished a disappointing eighth and was unable to qualify for the big final.
