October 17, 2013, Ontario, CA
Talented and entertaining super bantamweights highlight the current Thompson Boxing Promotions "Locked 'n Loaded" fight card set for Friday night, October 18, at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, CA.
In the main event they have San Diego’s Christopher Martin (27-2-3, 9 KOs) from Chula Vista, CA (122 lbs.) going up against Enrique Quevedo (14-6-1, 9 KOs) of Los Algodones, B. C., Mexico (122 lbs.) in an 8-round bout.
Martin, known as an intelligent and fluid boxer, looks to avenge an earlier draw in his career that occurred at the hands of Quevedo's twin brother, Daniel. "I know in my mind I won that fight," said Martin, who has won three out of his last four fights by knockout. "It's been six years since my fight against Daniel, but I haven't forgotten. Beating a Quevedo is something that's been on my mind for quite some time.
"Enrique has a different style than his brother. He's a boxer that likes to come forward and apply pressure. Whatever he brings, I'll be ready for it."
Martin has kept busy since his last fight, a fifth round KO victory over Raul Hidalgo in late June. "I took two weeks off after the Hidalgo fight and then I was back in the gym," said Martin, who is trained by Joe Vargas and Sergio Melendrez. "I was already in shape when training camp started. These last few weeks are all about fine-tuning our game plan, mixing up our sparring and staying fresh."
"Martin is one of the more interesting fighters on our roster," said Alex Camponovo, matchmaker for Thompson Boxing. "He knows how to use every square inch of the ring and he can very quickly figure out an opposing fighter's game plan. These skills will come in handy against Quevedo because he is tough as nails."
The Co-feature, also set for 8-rounds, pits volume, boxer-puncher Juan Ramon Reyes (9-1-2, 1 KO) of Riverside, CA (121 lbs.) going up against 5’5” Daniel “The Baby Faced Assassin” Roman (8-1-1, 3 KOs) from Garden Grove, CA (122 lbs.).
You could say Roman’s impressive record is misleading. He’s only faced three boxers with a winning record. In contrast, Reyes has faced much better competition. Only one of his opponents had a losing record.
Carlos “Memin” Carlson (11-0-0, 8 KOs) from Tijuana, B. C., Mexico (119 lbs.), another of Thompson Boxing Promotions’ recent signees, will be facing fellow Tijuanian 118 pound Guadalupe “Raton” Barreras (5-1-3, 2 KOs).
Carlson, a serious banger, will have his hands full with Barreras, who puts his emphasis on defense and tends to make his opponents look bad.
The 21 year-old Joshua “Young Gun” Conley (7-0-0, 6 KOs) of San Bernardino, CA (157 lbs.) versus Juan Carlos “Chiflado” Rojas (5-6-0, 4 KOs) from Saltillo, Coahuila de Zaragoza, Mexico (153 lbs.).
Conley better be prepared for this one. Rojas, who has never fought a boxer with a losing record, is facing Conley for the second time. Back on February 22 of this year, Rojas lost what many people considered a close, split decision to Conley. The bout is scheduled for 6-rounds.
Super featherweights (128 lbs.) Erick Ituarte (5-0-1, 1 KO) of Gomez Palacio, Durango, Mexico (128 lbs.) is going up against 32 year-old Roberto Ventura from Tijuana, B. C., Mexico (3-4-0, 1 KO) in a scheduled 4-rounder.
Preceding the Carlson-Barrera bout is another bout featuring a recent Thompson Boxing signee, light welterweight Israel (Mr. KO) Arellano (6-1-0, 5 KOs) of the House of Boxing in Paradise Hills, a San Diego neighborhood, in a 4-round bout against Mario Hermosillo (12-11-3, 2 KOs).
Last time we saw Hermosillo he was dropping to one knee at the Four Points By Sheraton Hotel after getting hit by a left hook to the midsection by Maurice “Mighty Mo” Hooker. That TKO loss came at 2:20 of Round one. It was Hermosillo’s fifth loss in his last six bouts.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the first bell rings at 7:45 p.m. TheDoubletree Hotel is located at 222 N. Vineyard Dr. Ontario, CA 91764 and can be reached at (909) 937-0900.
