Thomas Ravenel, the Charleston charmer who stole Kathryn Dennis’s heart on the first season of “Southern Charm” has formally announced his plans to run for the United States Senate. Ravenel will take on incumbent Sen. Lindsey Graham in the November race.

Thomas Ravenel, 51, officially announced that he will seek the independent nomination for the United States Senate. He took to the streets of Greenville, S.C. during the Fourth of July weekend according to report published on July 5, shaking hands with strangers and explaining his position on the state of politics in the United States. The former South Carolina State Treasurer feels that this country is on the wrong course and he is on a mission to put it back on the right track. Ravenel needs 10,000 signatures in order to get his name on the November ballot. He is confident that he will be able to do that.

Believing that neither the Republican nor the Democratic parties represent the citizen’s best interests, Ravenel says that Republicans are too conservative. On the other side of the aisle, Ravenel believes that Democrats are too liberal. This is why Thomas Ravenel has chosen to run for the Senate as an independent, because his belief is that we have too much government, which interferes with American freedoms. Ravenel believes that individual adults have the right to make the important decisions in their lives when it comes to education, health care and retirement.

In 2007 Ravenel was indicted on cocaine possession charges and served 10 months in federal prison. He reveals that the time he spent there taught him a great deal about taking responsibility, but also that the justice system is not fair to those who are less fortunate.

On March 24 Thomas Ravenel became a father for the first time when girlfriend Kathryn Calhoun Dennis, 22, gave birth to their daughter Kensington Calhoun Ravenel. The couple dated and briefly lived together during the filming of “Southern Charm” last summer in Charleston. On the season finale the couple broke up. But they had a happy ending. The couple reunited just days later and have been happily together ever since. They have not announced their engagement yet, but sources close to the couple say that they expect one soon.
