Throw off your shoes, kick up your heels and raise money to support relief efforts in Haiti at "Hop for Haiti, Hope for Haiti" at the Hilton Washington Dulles Hotel. This sock-hop swing-dance fundraiser begins with dance lessons at 8:30 PM before social dancing through midnight. Come dressed in '50s fashions and enjoy music by the Rock & Roll Relics. Proceeds will support Doctors Without Borders.
Listen to some of America's rising songwriters at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage, which has free performances every day at 6:00 PM. As part of its "Songwriters: The Next Generation" series, the stage welcomes Linda Oh, a double bassist, electric bassist and composer, and Devon Sproule, winner of the 2009 ASCAP Sammy Cahn Award.
Morocco meets Adams Morgan at Tangier Restaurant and Hookah Lounge, where belly dancing is performed every Friday and Saturday night. The classically trained dancer brings original choreography to this laid-back lounge, which offers 20 flavors of shisha, including apple, cappuccino and jasmine.
Saturday, January 30
The best artisans and crafters from the region gather the Dulles EXPO and Conference Center this weekend. The Sugarloaf Crafts Festival features interactive arts demonstrations, live music and children's entertainment and specialty gourmet foods available to sample and buy. Coupons are available for $1.00 off the admission price; you can buy tickets on-line or at the door.
Foodies unite at the Historic Old Town Alexandria Food Tour. Old Town still retains its 18th century charm, with Gadsby's Tavern Museum and the Lee-Fendall House. The food tour takes you throughout Old Town, with multiple mini meals included in the $50 ticket price. Tasting of an Alexandria specialty, jelly cake, is included.
If it rains Saturday night instead of snow, you'll want to be at Toledo Lounge, where the saying is, "If it rains, we pour." The bar offers $2.00 draft beers during rain storms -- but snow doesn't count so keep an eye on the forecast.
Sunday, January 31
Meet your favorite Nationals player, get autographs and take a clubhouse tour at NatsFest. Nationals Park opens its doors from 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM to give the public an up-close look. Take pictures with a player, attend Q&A sessions with sports writers and Nationals officials, explore the batting cages and even take a swing or two. Tickets are available on-line for $10 (adults) and $5 (kids).
At the end of the day, relax and enjoy the music at one of the city's GRAMMY viewing parties. Maddy's Bar & Grille offers happy hour deals all night long with no cover price. A "Guess the GRAMMY Winner" contest will award one patron a $50 Maddy's gift card.
