This weekend, Arnold Schwarzenegger appears in his first leading role in a movie in years with “The Land Stand”. Plus, Mark Wahlberg heads an all-star cast in “Broken City” and Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain cooks up some scares in “Mama”. What will you be checking out at the theater this weekend?
“The Land Stand”: This action movie directed by Jee-woon Kim stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Ray Owens, the sheriff of a small town on the Mexican border. A former LAPD officer, Owens hasn’t seen much action since he botched his last operation, but now, after escaping from an FBI prisoner convoy, the most wanted drug kingpin in the country is headed straight for the Mexican border. At first reluctant to become involved, Owens ends up taking charge of the U.S. law enforcement’s last chance to catch this criminal. Runtime: 107 minutes. Rated R for strong bloody violence throughout, and language.
“Broken City”: Directed by Alan Hughes, this crime drama stars Mark Wahlberg as Billy Taggart, an ex-cop seeking revenge when he is betrayed by the most powerful figure in his city: its mayor, Nicholas Hostetler (Russell Crowe). Runtime: 109 minutes. Rated R for pervasive language, some sexual content and violence.
“Mama”: This horror film directed by Andres Muschietti follows Annabel (Jessica Chastain) and Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), who take on the challenge of raising Lucas’s young nieces when they are found in the woods after living alone for five years. But as their behavior becomes increasingly strange, Annabel and Lucas start to wonder just how alone the girls were. Runtime: 100 minutes. Rated PG-13 for violence and terror, some disturbing images and thematic elements.
