A new year has begun to unfold with many resolutions in place for many people. Resolutions like lose weight, exercise more, work less and spend more time with family top the list.
Also on the resolutions list is the dedication and determination to get away from the every day hum drum of ordinary life as often as possible, to escape worries and routine, to allow your mind, and body, the freedom to rejuvenate.
To that end, I have a great solution; put the performing and cultural arts on your list of things to do. Go to a movie, the theatre, a concert or a symphony performance. You will be transported by means of music or theatre to a place far away from your daily routine and the stress of work, relationships and finances.
One of my favorite "getaways" is Schermerhorn Symphony Center, where you can get lost in a world of classical, jazz, blues, comedy or many others of a plethora of genres offered at one of Nashville's finest attractions.
Last night started a weekend of Mozart and Strauss at the symphony center, offering music to dream by; a relaxing evening of incredible talent conducted by Nashville Symphony's own Giancarlo Guerrero.
Featured in this concert is violin soloist Jennifer Koh, a virtuoso with an dramatic passion for her instrument. Koh is recognized for the intensity of her commanding performances, as well as her technical ability. The lovely violinist appears frequently at music centers including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Marlboro, Spoleto, Wolf Trap and The Festival International de Lanaudiere in Canada.
The impressive artist debuted with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at age 11 and went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from Oberlin College, after which she went on to study at Curtis Institute.
Koh definitely earned her place performing with major orchestras and conductors around the world with her 1994-95 win of the International Tchaikovsky Competition, the Concert Artists guild Competition and the Avery Fisher Career Grant.
The “prolific recitalist” has played with the Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, BBC London Symphony, Brandenburg Ensemble, Moscow Radio Symphony, Singapore Symphony, the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and Czech Philharmonic, among others.
Though the incredible artist may have fallen into playing violin by default when she chose the instrument in a Suzuki-method program only because spaces for cello and piano were already filled, it's definitely now her instrument of choice - and passion.
Don't miss your chance to see Jennifer Koh at Schermerhorn Symphony Center this weekend. Add to this unbelievable performance, a cup of soup and croissant from the Symphony Cafe or a fine dining experience at the in-house restaurant, Arpeggio, followed by a glass of wine from one of the bars set up throughout the center, and you have an extraordinary evening in the making.
