The first weekend of February 2012 brings many outdoor nature activities for all ages. The weather is expected to be very nice, so enjoy! Just remember to bring your hat or sunscreen when you go on these walks or work on your stewardship activities. All events are free unless otherwise noted.
Nature walks:
The Audubon Society will be hosting a birding walk at Lake Murray on February 4th at 8AM. In this area, you will most likely see a northern harrier, coots, mallards, wood ducks, grebes, warblers and killdeer. Meet at the north end of the lake near the restrooms where the baseball fields are. From the I-8, go north on Lake Murray Boulevard, turn left on Baltimore, then left on Jackson Drive, left again on Golfcrest for about a mile. The entrance will be on the left side of Golfcrest.
On Sunday, February 5th, there will be a birding walk at the Tijuana River Natural Estuarine Research Reserve (TRNERR) at 3PM. Meet at the visitor's center at 301 Caspian Way in Imperial Beach. You might see several birds resting up before their yearly migration there.
Lecture:
The TRNERR will be hosting a lecture called “Meet Your Underwater Parks” on Saturday, February 4th from 10AM to 1PM. This lecture is hosted by WiLDCOAST and will feather guest speaker Dr. Octavio Aburto. The lecture will cover the new “Underwater Park” at the Tijuana River Park. At noon, there is a guided walk through the estuary from the visitor's center to the ocean connector. Meet at the training center near the visitor's center at 301 Caspian Way.
Stewardship:
The San Diego River Park Foundation is sponsoring two planting sessions on February 4th. One begins at 9AM in Alpine at the newly acquired property called Peutz Creek Preserve. Volunteers will be planting native trees. RSVP is required. Call 619-297-7380 or email to sign up at volunteer@sandiegoriver.org.
The second session also begins at 9AM in Point Loma at the Friends of Point Loma Native Plant Garden. Call 619-297-7380 or email them at volunteer@sandiegoriver.org for more information.
There is an online meet-up group formed by the San Diego Audubon Society called WildCAT (Wildlife Conservation Action Team). This group was formed so that people interested in wildlife conservation and stewardship activities can meet-up and get informed about new projects. If you would like to join this meetup group, go to www.meetup.com/SDAS-WildCATs to sign up.
