Many organizations are planning several activities for this weekend, some celebrating Arbor Day on December 7th. However the weather is expected to be cold and rainy for most of Saturday. Many outdoor events may be canceled. Check with the organization hosting the event to confirm that it will take place. All events are free unless otherwise noted.
The Earth Discovery Institute will have an oak planting event at the Rancho Jamul Ecological Reserve from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The reserve is located along Highway 94 east of Spring Valley between Jamul and Descanso. Oak trees will also be planted in Mission Trails Regional Park on Saturday, December 7th. Volunteers are asked to bring their own gloves and shovels, if possible, but some may be provided. Or, they can cheer on and encourage the people planting the trees. Meet at the equestrian staging area off of Mast Boulevard in the East Fortuna area (northeastern part of the park). San Diego Audubon will have a nature walk at El Monte County Park on Saturday, December 7th 8 a.m to 11 a.m., weather permitting. Go east on the I-8 or Highway 52 and go north on Highway 67 and exit at Maplewood and go east as it turns into Lake Jennings Road. Also at San Diego Audubon headquarters on December 8th, they will have their annual holiday open house beginning at 4 p.m. and running until 6 p.m. There, they will showcase the art of Japanese artist Takashi Ijichi and his 10 year students. Ijichi will demonstrate Sumi-e Japanese brush painting and all artwork will be for sale with the proceeds donated to San Diego Audubon. Visitors are asked to bring their favorite beverage to share.
