This weekend in Music
Eddie Owen presents Suzanne Westenhoefer and Steff Mahan at Red Clay Theatre this weekend. Westenhoefer, known as the first openly gay comedian to appear on television, joins forces with songwriter Mahan to present a truly unique concert experience. The show will be held at Red Clay Theatre in Duluth, March 8 at 8pm. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. The Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra will present “Orchestral Explorations” on Saturday, March 9 at 7:30pm. Perfect for the entire family, this concert features selections such as Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, Strauss’s Serenade for Winds, Elgar’s Serenade for Strings, Dukas’s Fanfare to precede La Peri, and Britten’s The Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra. The concert will be held at the North Decatur Presbyterian Church in Decatur. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Concertmaster David Coucheron will join the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for a concert on March 9 and 10. The program includes Schubert’s Overture to Zauberharfe, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, Schubert/Berio’s Rendering, and Rossini’s William Tell Overture. There will be an 8pm performance on Saturday and a 3pm matinee on Sunday. All performances will take place in Atlanta Symphony Hall in the Woodruff Arts Center in Midtown Atlanta. Singer-songwriter Paul Thorn will present a concert on March 9 at 8pm. Presented by Eddie Owen presents, Thorn is touring in support of his latest release, “What the Hell is Going On?” Thorn will be joined by special guest Grace Pettis, for a concert of bluesy rock music that is truly Southern. There will be a Rockin’ Country Jam Concert featuring The Dallas Martin Band, Nathan Ware, and many more Saturday, March 9 at Wild Bills in Duluth. The concert is intended for an adult audience, and only ages 18 and over will be admitted. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased by calling 678-473-1000 or visiting the Wild Bills website.
Volume Five will play at Everett’s Music Barn on Saturday, March 9 at 8pm. The Everett Brothers will be the opening act for this bluegrass concert, appropriate for the whole family. The Michael O’Neill Singers will present “The Killer B’s”, March 10 at 3pm. The concert will feature the choir performing works of famous composers whose names begin with the letter B. The concert is appropriate for the entire family and features work by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. The concert will be held at the Roswell United Methodist Church in Roswell. This weekend in Theatre
Lionheart Theatre will open their production of Second Samuel on March 8 at 7:30pm. The show, which is appropriate for ages 13 and older, takes the audience to the small town of Second Samuel, GA. What is the big secret surrounding the death of Miss Gertrude? Find out in this funny and touching comedy! Second Samuel will play at Lionheart Theatre in Norcross through March 24. Fifth Row Center will open their production of Almost Maine on March 8 at 7:30pm. The show is appropriate for ages 10 and older, and looks at the many ways love can be expressed in a relationship. New London Theatre will open their production of On Golden Pond, March 8 at 8pm. This love story is appropriate for ages 10 and older. The Alliance Theatre will open their production of The Whipping Man, March 8 at 8pm. This world premier play was written by Kanoheda Graduate Playwriting Competition winner Matthew Lopez, and presents the story of wounded Jewish Confederate soldier Caleb DeLeon, and his former slaves, Simon and John. The Passover Seder shared by these men examines a time when everything is changing, but certain things still remain the same. The show is appropriate for an audience aged 16 and older. The Whipping Man will play on the Hertz Stage at the Alliance Theatre in the Woodruff Arts Center in Midtown Atlanta through April 7. The Southern Ballet Theatre will present Rapunzel this weekend. This magical, enchanting show is perfect for the whole family.
