Warm weather is creating an atmosphere of spring in the North Metro. This weekend would be the perfect time to get out and experience the arts in our area. Here are several great options to get you started.
This weekend in Music
Violinist Leila Josefowicz will join guest conductor James Gaffigan and the Atlanta Symphony orchestra this weekend to present the Ades violin concerto. Also featured on the program will be the Haydn Overture to l’Isola disabitata, the Wagner Lohengrin Prelude to Act 1, and the Debussey La Mer. Performances will be February 23 and 25 at 8pm in Symphony Hall in the Woodruff Arts Center. Kelly Clarkson, along with special guest Matt Nathanson will perform at the Fox Theatre February 23 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $29.50-$59.50, and may be purchased through TicketMaster.
The Emory Wind Ensemble will present a concert February 24 at 8pm. This free concert will be held in the Emerson Concert Hall in the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts located on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta.
Jazz Pianist McCoy Tyner and his Trio will play at the Rialto Center for the Arts in Atlanta February 25 at 8pm. The ensemble will be joined by guest Grammy award winner saxophonist and composer Joe Lovano. Tickets are $42-$68 and may be reserved via the Rialto Center website or by calling 404-413-9TIX.
The Michael O'Neal Singers and the Johns Creek Symphony will present The Brilliance of Beethoven Feburary 26 at 3pm. The concert, co-conducted by J.Wayne Baughman and Michael O'Neal will feature soloists Katie Baughman, Heather Witt, Adam Kirkpatrick, and John LaForge singing the Beethoven Mass in C Major, along with a performance of the Beethoven Symphony No.3 "Eroica". The concert will be held at the Roswell United Methodist Church in Roswell. Tickets are $20 for adults, and $15 for students/seniors. Tickets may be purchased via the MOS website or through the Johns Creek Symphony website.
Jonathan Biggers will present an organ recital February 26 at 4pm. This free recital will be held in the Emerson Concert Hall in the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts located on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta. The program includes organ fantasies by composers such as Mozart, Franck, and Reger.
This weekend in Theatre
Georgia Ensemble Theatre will open their production of The Foreigner February 23 at 8pm. This side splitting comedy presents the story of the arrival of shy Charlie, who just wants a relaxing weekend to the rural south. When his friend covers for his desire for silence by telling the locals he does not speak English, all kids of hilarity ensures. All performances will take place at Georgia Ensemble Theatre in Roswell through March 11. New Dawn Theater will open their production of Run for Your Wife February 23 at 8pm. This hilarious British farce is certain to have you rolling in the aisles! Run for Your Wife will play at the New Dawn Theater in Duluth through March 11. Tickets are $12-$15 and may be purchased through the New Dawn website or by calling 678-887-5015.
Winder-Barrow Community Theatre will open their production of A Bad Year for Tomatoes February 24 at 7:30pm. This comedy is certain to have audiences laughing until the final curtain. A Bad Year for Tomatoes will play at the Colleen O. Williams Theater in Winder through March 4. Starving Artist Productions of Emory University will open their production of The Phantom Tollbooth February 24 at 7:30pm. This delightful children's production will play in the Burlington Road Blackbox Theatre on the campus of Emory University through March 4. The Alliance Theatre will open their production of The Wizard of Oz February 25 at 3:30pm. Based on the classic film, this delightful musical is fun for the whole family as they join Dorothy for a magical trip down the yellow brick road. All performances will take place at the Alliance Theatre in the Woodruff Arts Center in Midtown Atlanta. The Wizard of Oz is recommended for ages 4 and up, and will play through March 11. This weekend in Dance
The Emory Dance program will present The Radio Show, Kyle Abraham/Abraham in Motion February 23-25 at 8pm. In The Radio Show, Pittsburgh native Kyle Abraham creates an abstract narrative around the loss of communication, as he investigates the effects of the abrupt discontinuation of Pittsburgh radio station WAMO on a community, and the lingering effects of Alzheimer's and aphasia on a family. All performances will take place in the Dance Studio at the Schwartz Center for the Arts on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta. This weekend in Visual Art
The High Museum of Art will open their new exhibition "New Discoveries: George Inness in Italy" on February 25. The exhibit features two early paintings by modern American artist George Inness, and will be on display through May 20. Visit the High Museums' website for more information or to purchase tickets.
The Tannery Row Artist Colony will open their exhibit Crazy 8's on February 25. The exhibit, which was commissioned to celebrate the colony's 8th anniversary, challenged the artists to create art in their medium based on the number 8. A gala opening night reception will be held February 25 at 6:00pm at the gallery in Buford. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
