If you’re looking for something exciting and fun to do over Memorial Day weekend, be sure to check out Louisville’s Abbey Road on the River. A tribute to the music of the Beatles, this annual five-day festival began in 2005 and has continues to delight locals and visitors yearly since then. Hosted by the Galt House Hotel and the city of Louisville, the event takes place on Louisville’s beautiful riverside Belvedere where outdoor stages, including the Lawn Stage used for featured shows, are set up.
With more than 9 stages (both in door and out door), Abbey Road on the River, presents a variety of bands and groups who perform for fun-loving participants. The Galt House Hotel & Suites provides indoor venues, mostly for smaller concerts, speakers and film screenings. Some bands look, sound and act like The Beatles. Others simply play the music of The Beatles. Additionally, some acts focus only on recreating the solo music of John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison.
No need to bring your lunch, the city has lined up a dozen or more kiosks where its fine restaurants and vendors feature everything from Bar-B-Q, pizza, and polish sausage to tacos, roasted buttered corn and smash burgers. And for dessert: funnel cakes and ice cream.
Abbey Road on the River (AROTR) is produced by Gary Jacob, a Cleveland resident who has produced numerous events including the National Rib Cook-off, Millennium events for Kodak in 2000 and Easter at the White House for eight years during the Clinton Administration. The first three AROTR events were held in Cleveland, OH in 2002, 2003 and 2004.
In 2005 the event moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where it is currently held annually over the Memorial Day weekend. A second annual East Coast version of the event (AROTR DC) takes place Labor Day weekend, just outside of the Nation's capital in National Harbor, MD.
