This Weekend: Last night for Tchaikovsky & Copland with Nashville Symphony

Tonight is the last night of the Tchaikovsky and Copland concert with Nashville Symphony at the elegant Schermerhorn Symphony Center. The conductor tonight is Giancarlo Guerrero, with Anne Akiko Meyers on violin.

The concert will feature a violin concerto, composed by Mason Bates. Born on January 23, 1977, in Philadelphia, the young composer currently lives in Oakland, California.

The Concerto for Violin was commissioned by Anne Akiko Meyers with the Pittsburgh Symphony. Meyers will be playing the violin during the performance with Nashville Symphony.

Bates, known for a unique blend of orchestral sounds with hints of DJ electronica, goes unplugged in this completely acoustic new work. The concerto is inspired by fossils of the ancient archaeopteryx, a scientific link between dinosaurs and birds.
