This weekend: Free Fortnightly Music Club concert

This Sunday evening, February 12th, will be the second Fortnightly Music Club concert of the year. The concert will be held at 7 pm in the Lucie Stern Community Center, 1305 Middlefield Road, in Palo Alto. The schedule includes soprano Kyoko Shimozaki and pianist Emily Frank performing pieces by Puccini, Strauss and Mozart, pianist Christyna Kaczynski-Kozel performing Debussy preludes, and violinist Clarice Horelick and pianist Corinne Barkin performing Brahms.

Last month’s concert marked the 104th anniversary of the Fortnightly Music Club. The FMC was formed in 1908 by a group of Stanford faculty wives interested in making high-caliber musical performances available and accessible to their community. At the time, the local community was very small and struggling, and had quite limited access to the greater musical experiences available in nearby San Francisco.  Over time, the FMC has evolved to showcase both professional and amateur classical music performers of all types, and still holds fortnightly free-to-the-public concerts. January’s performers played to a standing room only audience. Not only did concert-goers enjoy world-class pianist Emiliya Serebrennikova, violinist Norine Chang, and pianist Chryssie Nanou, they also had the rare treat of hearing club president David Saslav sing, while accompanied by his wife Melissa Smith on the piano.

Sunday’s concert will be, as always, free and open to the public. The event is suitable for all ages, and out of respect for the performers and other audience members, please ensure noise during performances is mitigated.
