Welcome to March! This weekend, along with the usual great shows, we celebrate two staples of Atlanta blues - Blind Willie's and WRFG.

Read on, dear reader-

Friday, Blind Willie's begins its 28th Anniversary celebration. Come out and congratulate them and enjoy Lazy Lester and Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne. Little G Weevil is at Black Bear Tavern and the Rockaholics are at Darwin's in Marietta. Seminole Jackson is at Fat Matt's Rib Shack and Frankie's Blues Mission is at Greater Good Barbeque. There's a Zydefunk King Cake Party at Northside Tavern and Donna Hopkins and Alex Guthrie are part of the Songwriter's Showcase at Steve's Live Music in Sandy Springs. Chicago Joe has a student jam at Tin Roof Cantina and Atlanta Boogie is at Two Urban Licks. The Electromatics Quartet featuring David Savage is at Churchill Grounds.

Satuday, Blind Willie's continues the celebration with Lazy Lester and Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne. Heather Luttrell is at Darwin's and The Tone Prophets are at Fat Matt's. The Carolina Chocolate Drops will light up Ferst Center at Georgia Tech. The Donna Hopkins Band is one of several bands playing Smith's Olde Bar.

Sunday, the Billy George Duo hosts the blues brunch at Cypress Street Pint & Plate. Snake LEgs is at Fat Matt's Rib Shack and Locals has its Sunday Night Jam in Acworth. Uncle Sugar is at Northside Tavern. Guy Davis appears with Fabrizio Poggi and Vernoika Jackson at The Red Clay Theatre in Duluth.

But the big news on Sunday is the WRFG Benefit at The Red Light Cafe from 1 to 5 pm Sunday. It features Francine Reed with Matt Wauchope, Diane Durrett Trio, Timo Arthur Trio, Stephen “The Blues Dude” Duncan, and Albert White with Eddie Tigner and tickets are only $10.

So that's it for this special weekend. But then every weekend is special for blues lovers in Atlanta1 Have fun and keep on bluesin!

P.S. I am working on a new book about Georgia blues. If you have any special memories of seeing Georgia blues legends or if you remember any blues venues or concerts before 1995, please email them to me at and I may include them in the book!
