This weekend: Films, filk, Vocaloids, and comics... oh, my!

There are plenty of events going on this March 1 weekend that are sure to satisfy your thirst for geek culture whether you're in the San Jose or all the way up in Sacramento and whether you like music, film, or comics.

Cinequest (February 26-March 10)

San Jose's independent film festival Cinequest has already begun in downtown and this weekend promises plenty of excellent films and panels for your viewing pleasure. You can check the calendar to see what is playing before purchasing tickets. One of the big highlights for Cinequest this year is an evening with Harrison Ford as he receives the Mavericks Spirit award on March 3 at 7:30pm. Tickets are sure to sell out fast for an opportunity to meet the talented actor.

Consonance 2013 (March 1-3)

Consonance is the Bay Area filk convention where fans and performers gather to share their love of filk music. For those new to the genre, filk is a musical culture, genre, and community connected to sci-fi & fantasy fandom as well as fan work. It's like folk music that has evolved through original song and parody. It can summarize a beloved work, poke fun at it, or both simultaneously. it's really hard to define as the genre keeps evolving. Fans are encouraged to create and share their musical musings. Consonance is held this year at the Crowne Plaza in Milpitas and a full weekend pass goes for $55 at the door.

VOCALOID3 Megpoid English Launch Event (March 3)

Anime fans are sure to be familiar with the Vocaloid phenomenon where music is synthesized and synced to a computer generated anime-stlyed dancing virtual idol like Hatsune Miku. NEW PEOPLE Cinema in San Francisco's Japantown is proud to host the launching of the new VOCALOID3 Megpoid software that will be available in English. This free launch event will feature workshops & demos of the new Megpoid software, Vocaloid dance performances, the Vocalekt Visions screenings, and opportunities to purchase Vocaloid merchandise. Free trial versions of VOCALOID3 Megpoid software will be distributed while supplies last.

Sac-Con (March 3)

Sac-Con is Sacramento's comic, toy, and anime show. Fans can shop for media and merchandise while admiring the cosplay present and perhaps meeting some of Sac-Con's guests who work in the comic industry. In addition to various comic artists ready to show off their work, this month's Sac-Con features actor John DiMaggio, who is best known for his voice acting roles like Jake the dog from "Adventure Time" and Bender the robot from "Futurama." Sac-Con is celebrating Mr. DiMaggio's appearance by giving away free "Adventure Time" art prints for the first 500 fans attending. Registration is only $6 at the door.
