This Friday, Disney takes us back to the magical land of Oz in “Oz the Great and Powerful”, a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz”. It’s the first big movie of 2013, but will you be seeing it? Read about that film and this weekend’s other new releases below.
Nationwide Releases:
“Oz the Great and Powerful”: Directed by Sam Raimi, this fantasy adventure stars James Franco as Oscar Diggs, a Kansas magician who is whisked away to the land of Oz. There he meets three witches: Glinda (Michelle Williams), Evanora (Rachael Weisz), and Theodora (Mila Kunis). Some of them are convinced he is the powerful wizard sent there to save them, while the others don’t. Reluctantly drawn into the problems facing the inhabitants of Oz, Oscar must use his knowledge of magic to transform into the great wizard he was meant to be—and to become a better man. Available for viewing in 3D. Runtime: 130 minutes. Rated PG for sequences of action and scary images, and brief mild language.
“Dead Man Down”: In this crime drama directed by Niels Arden Opley, Colin Farrell plays Victor, a man who has worked his way into a New York crime syndicate for the sole purpose of making its leader, Alphonse (Terrence Howard) pay for destroying his once happy life. In the meantime, he becomes interested in Beatrice (Noomi Rapace) a woman who also wants vengeance against Alphonse and who threatens to expose Victor unless he helps her achieve it. Runtime: 110 minutes. Rated R for violence, language throughout, and a scene of sexuality.
