This weekend, you and your family can get outside and enjoy the great weather in Chicago. Not sure what to do? On Aug. 9 and 10, 2014, you and your family can check out a farmer’s market, catch the fireworks show at Navy Pier, and more. To get started in planning your weekend, keep the following list of activities in mind.
Consider starting the weekend by volunteering as a family. Through The Honeycomb Project, you and your family can help pack groceries for people within Chicago’s Ravenswood neighborhood. The volunteer project takes place at the Ravenswood Community Pantry (4332 N. Paulina St., Chicago). The project starts at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 9. Although registration is full, you can register to be included on the wait list.
If your family is up for a late night, then consider making the Navy Pier fireworks display part of your weekend plans. You can head down to Navy Pier (600 E. Grand Ave., Chicago), or pack a picnic blanket and find a spot along Lake Michigan. The show starts at 10:15 p.m. on Aug. 9.
Are you looking for a way to incorporate more local foods in your family’s diet? Then consider stopping by the Farmers Market at Garfield Park Conservatory (300 N. Central Park Ave., Chicago). The market is held in the conservatory’s parking lot and is open Aug. 10 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and you can pick up just about everything you need for dinner that night.
Take a step back in time by attending the Riverview Farmstead Open House and Ice Cream Social on Aug. 10 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Learn what life was like at the time the farmstead was built, and enjoy some ice cream, too. The Farmstead is located in the Riverview Farmstead Preserve in Naperville; for directions, consult the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s website.
