This weekend at Johnstown area ski resorts: January 18 through 21

January is half over and that means that you are running out of time to take part in Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month. Snow and cold weather has returned to the Johnstown area and the resorts are making snow. This should make skiing conditions great for the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. Here are some of the things happening on the slopes around the Johnstown area. Hidden Valley Resort continues to offer a good selection of activities for the weekend. Kick off the weekend is fine fashion at Hidden Valley with the Froggy 94.9 Tubing event on Friday, January 18. The event takes place 6:00 p.m. through 9:00 p.m. with a live broadcast from the Outback Snow Tubing Park. Mention Froggy and receive a free child’s admission with the purchase of an adult admission. Saturday and Sunday, Hidden Valley will present their first Subaru Master the Mountain weekend of the season. It is a great way to sharpen your skiing and boarding skills. Also happening on Saturday is the Second Open Cup presented by the Hidden Valley Race Club. The event is open to the public and you can register outside the Season Pass Locker Room from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per race.

Mystic Mountain at Nemacolin Woodlands continues its Neighbors and Friends Night. As they do every weekend this season, they will kick off the weekend on Friday with the event which begins Friday at 2:00 p.m. and lasts until 10:00 p.m. During the event you can purchase a lift ticket for only $15 or for $25 with equipment rental.

Seven Springs is welcoming the Trans Am Snowboarding Tour this weekend. The competition will take place on Saturday, January 19 at the base of The Spot. Advanced registration was available online, but you can also register the day of the event at the yurt for $15. Onsite registration is on a first-come basis and begins at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday and lasts until 10:00 a.m. Competition will begin at 11:00 a.m. with the finals beginning at 1:00 p.m. The awards ceremony will take place in the Season’s Room at the main lodge at 2:30 p.m. Check the full rules and regulations online for more information.

Wisp Resort in McHenry, Maryland is starting the weekend off with some snowboarding competition. They will be holding their first Friday Night Rail Jam of the year at the Pro Park on Friday, January 18. The open style competition is open to skiers and snowboarders. The cost is $15 and registration begins at 6:00 p.m. with the competition beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Whitetail Resort, near Mercersburg, PA, has a couple of exciting programs on Sunday. Come out Sunday, January 20 and enjoy Sunday Cone Sunday. Kids can get a free snow cone outside the rentals building between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. Snow cones will be available in several flavors while supplies last and are for the kids. For the adults, there is a different activity. Sunday is also Burton Board Demo Day. The event takes place from 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Burton Demo Tent near the rental building. It is your chance to try a variety of Burton boards for free. Participants under 18 should be accompanied by an adult. You must have a valid ID and credit card to take advantage of this opportunity.
