Is jazz somehow penetrating mainstream culture again? For encouraging/perplexing evidence, JazzTimes notes that not one but two songs currently riding high on the country charts name-check John Coltrane. And one of them in a positive way!

- Three College of San Mateo combos play big-band tunes by Dave Holland, Duke Ellington and more, 7:30 p.m. Monday at the CSM Theater. $5.
- Pianist Art Lande and his quartet perform standards and original tunes, 8 p.m. Friday at Piedmont Piano Company in Oakland. $15
- Singer Freda Payne, best known as an R&B belter (i.e. “Band of Gold”) returns to her original love with a show that honors icons Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Lena Horne. 8 p.m. Saturday at Yoshi’s San Francisco. $30
- Bassist/bandleader/all-around wonderman Marcus Shelby discusses the legacy of Duke Ellington in the second part of his “Listening Party,” 4 p.m. Sunday at the Jazz Heritage Center. $7-$10
- Grammy-nominated singer Denise Donatelli caresses the standards with a show that pays close attention to inspirations Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, 7 p.m. Sunday at Yoshi’s Oakland. $20
- Guitarist Jeff Massanari and organ wizard Wil Blades team up for a night of funky good-time sounds, starting 8 p.m. Saturday at saxman Anton Schwartz’s loft in Emeryville. $15-$25
- Pianist Bill Charlap, a fluid and imaginative player who also has the guts to perform duets with his wife, Rene Rosnes, performs with his trio at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society near Half Moon Bay. $35
