This week's top Bay Area jazz choices

Is jazz somehow penetrating mainstream culture again? For encouraging/perplexing evidence, JazzTimes notes that not one but two songs currently riding high on the country charts name-check John Coltrane. And one of them in a positive way!

Show the masses you were digging the vibe back when by turning out for one of the Bay Area’s marquee jazz shows this week:

  • Three College of San Mateo combos play big-band tunes by Dave Holland, Duke Ellington and more, 7:30 p.m. Monday at the CSM Theater. $5.
  • Pianist Art Lande and his quartet perform standards and original tunes, 8 p.m. Friday at Piedmont Piano Company in Oakland.  $15
  • Singer Freda Payne, best known as an R&B belter (i.e. “Band of Gold”) returns to her original love with a show that honors icons Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Lena Horne. 8 p.m. Saturday at Yoshi’s San Francisco. $30
  • Bassist/bandleader/all-around wonderman Marcus Shelby discusses the legacy of Duke Ellington in the second part of his “Listening Party,” 4 p.m. Sunday at the Jazz Heritage Center. $7-$10
