This Week: Queens Library to present local adaptation of The Wizard of Oz

Expect the following special family programs and events to take place this week in Queens including a local adaptation of MGM classic The Wizard of Oz, the start of a free children's social skills group in Queens College, and a children's program on the scientific contributions of Dr. George Washington Carver, among other things.

Discovery Team Science Lab: March 11 at 6 p.m.

Description: Elementary school kids will get to experiment on and explore several science concepts. Registration not required.

Dr. George Washington Carver-Wizard of Tuskegee: March 12 at 4 p.m.

Description: Children attending this program will learn about Dr. Carver's scientific contributions made towards botany, agriculture, chemurgy, botanical illustration, industrial engineering, and medicine. Participants will also learn about the important role plants played in Dr. Carver's life when he was a child. Participants will then paint with botanicals and plant a peanut to take home for further observation.

Free Children's Social Skills Group at Queens College Psychological Center: March 12 at 4:30 p.m.

Description: Each spring the Queens College Psychological Center offers a special series of group sessions in service to the community. Starting this week QCPC will offer a free children's social skills group that will meet every Tuesday for 10 sessions. The program's goal will be to help increase children's self-esteem and social skills in a nurturing environment. Children will learn how to use problem solving skills, how to acquire new social skills towards making and keeping friends, and how to handle stress and conflict. A parent's group will run at the same time that will show parents how to understand their child's specific needs, how to nurture children, and how to manage common issues such as sleep, discipline, homework, siblings, and routines.
