Here are some highlights for running in the New York City and Brooklyn area this week:
Weather
Despite Punxsutawney Phil predicting six more weeks of winter on Groundhog's Day, the weather continues to be warm. This week, runners can expect temperatures in the high 40s and low 50s, with Saturday being the coldest day of the week with a high of 41. Thursday and Friday are expected to be wet, with a 30 and 40 percent chance of rain, respectively.
Running events and meetings
JackRabbit Sports is hosting a seminar about the benefits of cross training on Wednesday, February 22 at 7 p.m. at its Union Square location (42 West 14th Street). Additionally, for those who are interested in training for a half marathon, the Park Slope location (151 7th Avenue, Brooklyn), is hosting an information session on Thursday, February 23 for people to learn more about training and running with the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation for America. Runners of all experience levels are welcome to come.
Runners seeking to run an upcoming 5K are welcome to join the "How to Run a 5K" session at the Union Square (42 West 14th Street) location at 7 p.m. Jim Cooper, a running, cycling and triathlon certified coach, will give tips and outline the ideal training plan.
JackRabbit Sports will also host several group runs around the city:
- Monday, February 20 at 6 p.m., Group Run (Upper East Side, 1255 Lexington Avenue)
- Tuesday, February 21 at 7 p.m., Group Run (Union Square, 42 West 14th Street)
- Wednesday, February 22 at 7 p.m., Group Run (Park Slope, 151 7th Avenue, Brooklyn)
- Sunday, February 26 at 8 a.m., Group Run (Upper West Side, 140 West 72nd Street)
Prospect Park Track Club will also host its weekly runs on Wednesday and Saturday this week, for members and non-members. On Wednesday, the club will meet at Grand Army Plaza at 7:15 p.m. and on Saturday, they will meet in the same location at 8 a.m.
Races
Several races of varying distances will be held this weekend, including the already sold-out NYRR Al Gordon Classic in Prospect Park. Runners seeking a longer distance can head to the Febapple Frozen Fifty on Saturday, February 25 in Maplewood, New Jersey. Four race distances are available, including 50 miles, 50 kilometers, 20 miles and 10 miles. The 50K and 50M start at 7 a.m. and the 20M and 10M start at 9 a.m.
New York Road Runners is holding its fourth Thursday Night at the Races on Thursday, February 23 at 7 p.m. It will be held at the Armory New Balance Track & Field Center. For $20, runners have an opportunity to run as many races as they would like.
