This week in Milwaukee Jazz (Feb. 18-24)

This week's recommended events for February 18-24 include:

1. Nineteen Thirteen at VIA Downer on Tuesday night at 7:30 (no cover).

2. The Steve Peplin Quintet at the Jazz Estate on Friday night at 9:30 ($5 cover).

Nineteen Thirteen is led by cellist Janet Schiff and includes Victor DiLorenzo, a founding member of the Violent Femmes on percussion and Scott Johnson on drums. The band's sound is self-described as post-rock. Schiff uses effects pedals and a looping device to create layers of sound while DiLorenzo and Schiff provide the rhythmic backing. The band took its name from the year in which Schiff's cello was made. For a sound preview, click here: http://nineteenthirteen.bandcamp.com/

Steve Peplin is a veteran of the Jazz Estate scene but has only recently tried his hand as a band leader. The sound will be straight-ahead post-bop (more "conservative" than free jazz) with a classic finish. If previews from Peplin's recent CD are any indication, the set will be largely guitar-led. Perhaps the style could be compared to Kenny Burrell, in that it is slightly bluesy in tone and has a bit of a strut. On some tracks there is a bit of a swinging flamenco influence that comes through, suggestive of Django Reinhardt. *Update: Steve Peplin has informed me that he will be playing some tunes from a new album to be released later this month called "In League with Witches". Click here for some unreleased samples: http://soundcloud.com/steve-peplin/in-league-with-witches-album
