This Week in DVD Releases

After the long weekend, if you weren't able to work in that extra time to watch or catch up on some of the movies you might have missed, be sure to take a look at what hit the shelves today. As the Oscars continue inch closer, this week has a nominee or two that is released along with some action and comedy. No matter what you might be looking for, in this week's releases there is really something for everyone.

1. "Captain Phillips": This inspired by true events stars Tom Hanks in another outstanding role. Already creating quite a buzz from the award nominations, this movie snagged six Oscar nominations including Best Picture. Hitting shelves with plenty of time before the March 2nd Oscar air date, audiences have more than enough time to see what they might have missed in theaters. The movie tells the true story of Captain Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates, which was the first occurrence in over two hundred years. See all the action, drama and suspense this movie has to offer and see if you will be in its corner come award night.

2. "Blue Jasmine": This movie is another Oscar hopeful in the Best Actress category for the already Golden Globe winner this year Cate Blanchett and Best Original Screenplay. A Woody Allen drama that tells the story of a New York housewife (Blanchett) who is in crisis as her life falls apart around her. Allen was honored this year at the Golden Globes with the Cecil B. DeMille Award which is for outstanding contributions to entertainment. He continues adding more works of high quality, emotion filled, character driven movies to his collection and before the statues are handed out, audiences get the chance to see this contender and measure how it weighs up to his other classics.

3. "Machete Kills": Not looking for a heavy, award filled movie and just need some mindless, crazy action, check out this movie which is a follow up to the 2010 film "Machete". Written and directed by Robert Rodriguez, who is known for his over the top action films and starring a wide assortment of talented actors Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Mel Gibson. This tells the story of ex-Federale agent Machete, whose help is enlisted by the President of the USA to stop a revolutionary and an peculiar arms dealer who plan to spread war and anarchy across the planet. In true Rodriguez fashion, this film is full of explosions, chaos and of course deaths.

4. "The Starving Games": Feeding off the popular success of "The Hunger Games" movies and following in the footsteps of other parody movies such as "Dance Flick" and "Vampires Suck" comes this off beat comedy. Set in very similar circumstance, this movie tells the story of hero Kantmiss Evershot (Maiara Walsh) who volunteers for younger sister in the 75th annual "Starving Games". In a fight to the death, Kantmiss must team up with geeky baker's son Peter Malarkey (Cody Allen Christian) with the hope of making it out alive. Writer and director Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer team up again for their sixth movie spoof to create another comedy for audiences to take watch favorite big blockbuster hits and get a little laugh out of them.

This week has something for everyone and some can't miss award contenders. Whether you are looking for a laugh, cry or mindless action, this week has something for everyone.
