According to CBS News Monday, U.S. warships took position in the Mediterranean Sea within firing range of Damascus; as a usually hawkish President Barack Obama weighs the expense and possible benefit of military engagement in the region.
Syria will be conservative America’s next wake up call. An exercise in futility paid for with the current and future tax dollars of lower and middle class Americans. And, although American lives will be saved through the long range deployment of ship to shore cruise missiles, at $1.4 million per, the message sent will be an expensive one.
Barack Obama’s no dummy! Say what you will, this second term president is twice warned and three times burned when it comes to hair trigger; knee-jerk; provocation from a trigger happy, and often special interest, dollar motivated Congress. According to White House reports, the president is exhibiting caution as to a U.S. military engagement in Syria.
In other news the president points to a prolonged, pain filled Afghanistan War as his benchmark; while weighing the odds as to a successful engagement in a region that does not welcome the United States. The president will not receive United Nations approval for his actions. Obama instead looks to a United States military ally coalition for a nod of approval and a willingness to participate in the reprimand of the Assad regime.
On Monday it was announced that Obama is gaining approval from England, France and others as he draws closer to a qualified decision to deploy and engage.
The president has stated that he requires the support of the international community, before launching a cruise missile attack on Syria.
After all, as learned from past U.S.engagement in Iraq and Libya, the Arab world and for that matter the majority of the free world, looks down at the bully on the block ( the U.S.) who takes it upon himself to attack and generally destroy a sovereign nation and its people. All under a flag of liberation and the preservation of democracy; In this case Syria.
Granted, Syria’s Assad is by any measure a despotic ruler, a monster if you will. But he is not a recognized enemy of the United States of America. Obama will order the warning shot heard around the world.
Much like the now dead Libyan Gaddafi, Assad's rule is sanctioned by the Arab and Asian world due to his control of energy resources. Syria has never been noted for its economic political stability. And, as with much of the Arab world, the people of Syria yield to the powers to be out of compromise; and do so in order to survive and sometimes prosper within a military enforced ‘president for life’ tribal based society.
On Monday it was confirmed that Assad forces had used indiscriminate poisonous gas on civilian populations in Damascus. The verified death count is in the thousands. A United Nations task force sent to the area to verify the use of chemicals weapons, was shot at today by snipers positioned on the streets of Damascus.
The how what and why of war is irrelevant. By using chemical weapons on the people of Syria, the monster has crossed Obama’s red line in the sand, and must be punished; States the world news media. According to substantiated reports from the region, Assad has unleashed an internationally banned, most heinous weapon on the innocent civilian occupants of Syria.
As the world waits for Obama to call the order to engage U.S. military forces in the region, Assad warns that such an action will result in world-wide chaos. The rantings of a mad man? Perhaps! Only Assad knows for sure.
To date no fewer than 100,000 men, women and children have perished in the 2 year Syrian Civil War. To put the death- count into perspective, it’s been estimated that no fewer than 170,000 perished in the United States lead assault on Iraq. Other Monday estimates run as high as 600,000.
This number does not account for the million souls that perished from starvation and disease during the United States sanction trade embargo forced on the people of Iraq following the first Iraq war.
President Obama is painfully aware of the impact of the most powerful war machine in the world on the civilian based at the point of encounter. In the case of Syria, a United States Navy launched cruise missile barrage will inflict billions of dollars in lost property damage and untold civilian and military personnel death and injury.
Today’s news assures the American people that the most probable attack will not be launched in the hopes of displacing Assad. According to the U.S., it’s simply a warning shot, a message to Assad that the use of chemical weapons will not be tolerated by the international community.
At $1.4 million dollars per missile, it’s a damned expensive message; hopefully an effective, lifesaving one.
