Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
You hear it all the time, “Join the church of your choice and you can make it to heaven. After all we are all trying to get to heaven and they all lead to the same place”.
Well that statement is really a subject about two different ideas. Are we to join a church of our choice? And are all churches that profess to believe in Christ, leading people to heaven?
Let’s start with this important question,” Is this what Jesus taught”?
Here at Acts chaper 2 we read about how the Jews ritually dedicated their lives to the Day of Pentecost, which was the 50th day after their Feast of the Passover. (Another dedicated day recognizing how God’s chosen people was saved while in Egypt from the death angel that killed all the first born males - before Pharaoh decided to free them as slaves of Egypt).
The Jews would assemble in Jerusalem as they recognized this feast, but this time as the apostles of Jesus spoke about the wondrous miracles and works of Jesus, every man present at that time heard this message in his own language. Acts 2:7-12 This miracle made the Jews afraid, so they claimed the apostles had been drinking. So Peter boldly stood up and preached to the crowd that they were not drunk but since the people did not retain the things of old they had already been taught from the prophet Joel they were guilty of crucifying our Savior as well. (Acts 2:16)
This brings us to Act 2:37-41, when the people heard what Peter said they were very sorry they didn’t listen and they wanted to know what they could do to fix this terrible thing they had done. Peter told them the only thing they could do was to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and they would receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Not all of them did what Peter said, but the bible says three thousand souls were added. NOT JOINED but ADDED.
We are called by God’s word and then we are added to Christ's church.
1 Corinthian 1:9
God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
As for the road leading to heaven, Christ gave Peter the keys to this answer at Matthew 16, so follow the church Christ established and you too will see Him one day.
Matthew 16: 13-19
When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
