Five years ago, Jeff Graham, Dr. Alexander Schauss (CEO and Senior Director of Natural and Medicinal Products Research at AIBMR Life Sciences, in Puyallup, Washington) and Ken Murdock (founder of herbal giant company Nature's Way) started a company called K2A for the purpose of searching the world for unique natural products and ingredients with a potential for impact the wellness of humanity.

What they found was Acai.

You've heard about it from Oprah, Dr. Oz, best-selling author Dr. Perricone, and other experts, and featured in magazines like Beverage World, and Fox News, but what is Acai and what makes it so special?

The Acai is a recently discovered fruit harvested in "clusters" on stems that grow at the top of three different varieties of palm trees. When ripe, the berries are dark purple and about the size of a blueberry. They contain a thin layer of edible pulp surrounding a large seed.

Stephen Talcott, Assistant Professor with the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, says "historically, Brazilians have used acai berries to treat digestive disorders and skin conditions." Tom Nordlie, also of UF, adds that "Current marketing efforts by retail merchants and Internet businesses suggest acai products can help consumers lose weight, lower cholesterol and gain energy."

it's important to know that only one Acai palm (Euterpe Oleracea) produces fruit with a level of nutritional value that makes it highly commercial. What's special is that fruit's unique antioxidant quality.

Acai has an ORAC score (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity, or ability to inhibit free radicals) higher than any other known fruit or vegetable to date, on a gram per gram basis. In comparison to Vitamin C, which dissipates quickly once absorbed in the body, the Acai berry's antioxidant effect is both immediate and long lasting, thus providing an ever more powerful impact, a cumulative effect as additional quantities are consumed.

One specific type of Acai has been found to be biologically active within seconds after ingestion, as well as hours and even days later. The catch is it must be freeze-dried within a couple of hours after harvesting to retain those vital antioxidant capabilities.

One company, has patented this process and freeze dries the acai immediately after harvest, right in Brazil. So only the ripest and peak quality Acai berries are selected from each cluster for us. So, how does the Acai berry kill cancer?
